FibroScan® Liver Test: What You Need to Know
Why Your Provider May Recommend a FibroScan®
If your lab results or medical findings suggest potential liver disease, your gastroenterologist may recommend a FibroScan® test (also known as transient elastography). This non-invasive test helps assess liver health by detecting signs of damage.
Liver conditions such as Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH), hepatitis, and even certain medications can contribute to liver stress or damage. By measuring the extent of liver fibrosis (scarring), the test provides valuable insights that help guide treatment decisions, prevent further damage, and, in some cases, improve liver health.
The FibroScan® is a quick and painless in-office procedure that takes about 20 minutes. It produces detailed images of your liver, allowing your doctor to evaluate any scarring or abnormalities that may require medical attention.
How FibroScan® Works
The FibroScan® test is a non-invasive procedure that functions similarly to an ultrasound. It measures liver stiffness by sending painless sound waves through the skin. During the scan, you may feel a gentle tapping sensation as the technician takes 10 to 15 measurements from the right side of your abdomen, near the ribcage.
This test helps detect scarring (fibrosis) or liver damage that may have developed over time due to medical conditions or lifestyle factors. Once the scan is complete, your healthcare provider will interpret the results, provide a diagnosis, and recommend appropriate steps to prevent further liver damage and improve overall health.
Why a FibroScan® Test Is Important
Your liver plays a vital role in maintaining overall health by filtering toxins, metabolizing medications, cholesterol, vitamins, and minerals, and producing essential proteins and clotting factors. However, long-term liver damage—such as cirrhosis—can disrupt these critical functions, potentially leading to severe health complications.
With liver disease becoming increasingly common, early detection and intervention are key to preventing further damage. A FibroScan® test helps assess your liver’s condition, allowing your provider to take proactive steps toward protecting and improving your liver health.
