Sudomotor Testing / Autonomic Neuropathy
Sudomotor testing is a diagnostic method used to assess the function of the autonomic nervous system, particularly its ability to regulate sweat production. This test is vital for diagnosing autonomic neuropathy, a condition in which nerve damage affects the body’s automatic functions, such as heart rate, digestion, and sweat regulation.
In autonomic neuropathy, the nerves that control sweat glands may become damaged, leading to either excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) or insufficient sweating (hypohidrosis). Sudomotor testing helps evaluate this dysfunction by measuring how the sweat glands respond to stimuli. The test often involves applying a small electrical current or using heat to stimulate sweat production, with the responses being measured and analyzed.
This test is especially useful for individuals with conditions such as diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, or cardiovascular diseases, where autonomic neuropathy is common. Early detection through sudomotor testing allows for timely interventions to manage symptoms and prevent complications.
